Sociology of family and education – baby boom and lack of school places

The news that Britain is reaching the limits of its primary school system affects both the family and education modules. Demographically, Britain is experiencing a baby boom and record levels of immigration, so this is placing a lot of pressure on schools. It is believed that the UK will have the biggest population in Europe by the end of the century and clearly new places for children need to be made available.

The local authorities’ organisation said that, over the next decade, there would need to be places for an extra 880,000 pupils at a cost of £12bn. The increase in young children is a good thing for the country because of the ageing population but it is also a challenge for the government to address.
