A2 Beliefs: The Birth of a Nation – Marxism

Keep an eye out for the film, The Birth of a Nation. It about the slave Nate Turner and the story is a great example of Marxist arguments about religion as an agency of social control. At first, Turner preaches the parts of the Bible that suit the white man’s oppression of the slaves – a traditional Marxist argument. However, he becomes a liberation theologian – he uses the Bible to confront slavery. Liberation theology is a key part of the Neo Marxist argument; Otto Maduro argues that religion is a form of social control most of the time, however, at times religious leaders can confront authority and stand up to injustice.
