  1. Assess the view that cults, sects and New Age movements are fringe organisations that are inevitably short-lived and of little influence in contemporary society. (33 marks)

Introduction: define what cults, sects and NAMs are. Identify some background information about when they started to emerge etc.

Part 1: Sects – discuss the features of a sect and consider examples of sects such as the Amish and Mormons – do these groups exist on the fringes of society? Are/were they short lived? What influence do they have upon society? Now compare these to other sects such as the People’s Temple and Branch Davidians – these groups were short lived, on the fringes of society and of little influence. Lastly, look at Methodists – a sect that became a denomination.

Part 2: Cults – now repeat for cults such as Scientology and the Unification Church (Moonies)

Part 3: NAMs – Lastly, compare cults and sects with NAMs – do these have more or less influence? Are they more or less on the fringes? Short lived?
